Meet the Power Buddies: Running Toward Inclusion, One Race at a Time

Power buddy

At Special Compass, we believe mobility should never be a barrier to connection. That’s why we created the Power Buddy program — a volunteer-driven movement where able-bodied athletes team up with individuals with disabilities to experience the thrill of racing together.

What Is a Power Buddy?

Power Buddies are more than just volunteers — they’re teammates, motivators, and friends. They train alongside our Rider Athletes, learn how to safely push our adaptive racing chairs, and help turn what was once impossible into a shared victory.

From Training to Finish Line

Before hitting the race course, every Power Buddy participates in one of our Running Clinics. These clinics are designed to:

  • Teach proper pushing technique using our specialized racing chairs
  • Promote safety and endurance for long-distance events
  • Build trust between the Buddy and their Rider
  • Encourage teamwork and communication

This isn’t just about the race — it’s about the bond that’s formed along the way.

Real Impact, Real Friendships

Time and again, our Riders tell us how seen, heard, and valued they feel. And Buddies? They often say it’s one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives. It’s a relationship that goes far beyond the starting line.
