When doctors told Jim that Michael, born with cerebral palsy, would never live a “normal” life, he refused to accept their limitations. Instead, he chose a path of resilience and possibility—one paved with miles of sweat, hope, and heart.Jim strapped Michael into a specialized racing wheelchair and began pushing him through marathons, triathlons, and beyond. But this journey wasn’t just about finishing races—it was about showing the world what true inclusion looks like in motion.
The Birth of Special Compass
What began as a father’s mission to give his son freedom and joy evolved into Special Compass, a nonprofit organization that pairs differently-abled athletes with able-bodied partners. Together, these teams experience the thrill of competition, the joy of movement, and the dignity of breaking barriers—one race at a time.Special Compass’s impact has rippled across communities, empowering countless individuals like Michael to defy physical limitations and embrace the possibilities of what they can achieve.

From adaptive home makeovers, like the one pictured above in Sunrise, Florida, to groundbreaking projects like the planned 60-unit adaptive housing complex, Special Compass is transforming lives through action, compassion, and innovation.In 2021, Special Compass organized a three-day home makeover for a couple, ensuring their home was accessible and welcoming. With over 40 volunteers working tirelessly, this project captured the heart of the organization’s mission: fostering independence and inclusion.
